Sustainable developments in the seaport of Wismar
Continuous change through innovation and new technologies is a necessary first turning point that will help reduce the seaport's carbon footprint. Continuing to focus port operations on sustainable developments will be crucial for future success. A clear competitive advantage that guarantees more sustainable growth in the long term. The energy transition will be a driving force for sustainability in the port. This is how we are working towards becoming a green port:
Focus on renewable energies
Reorganization of the power supply through photovoltaics as the first significant milestone in the conversion of the port’s energy concept to a Green Port. A photovoltaic system with a projected yield of approx. 2,200 kWp is expected to be commissioned on a previously unused open space at the end of the first quarter of 2023. The self-consumption share of the energy generated on the seaport site will be around 35-40%. It is planned to feed surplus green energy into the public grid.
More control in the energy procurement process and high savings in electricity procurement costs are a clear competitive advantage and guarantee long-term price stability. Green electricity generated on site not only relieves the strain on the grids, but also makes a major contribution to CO2-neutral port operations. Further measures, such as the use of wind energy, are already being planned. In future, we aim to use only green electricity from solar and wind energy.
Gradual conversion of the vehicle fleet to e-drive
The gradual conversion of the vehicle fleet to e-drive will result in a significant reduction in costs, fuel consumption and emissions without compromising productivity. This will be a decisive competitive advantage in terms of total cost of ownership in the future. In addition, air emissions are lower and the machines make less noise.
Clean air is an issue in the working environment, but it is also of great importance for the people living near the port. It is therefore crucial that we reduce emissions.
Other measures on the way to becoming a green port include converting industrial trucks to battery operation and revising the lighting concept.Conserving resources - reducing energy and water consumption
With the new administration building and the new building complex for port employees, technologies and new processes are being used for heating, ventilation and lighting, among other things, in order to reduce electricity and water consumption.
Partnerships and innovations
In terms of sustainability, we seek active collaboration with various partners. Strong partnerships and an open-minded and committed approach to innovation are key to effectively implementing the necessary changes and becoming more environmentally aware.
Portable 5.0 is a joint project between the Rhine ports of Karlsruhe, the seaport of Stralsund and the seaport of Wismar with the aim of setting up a company-owned 5G campus network. By testing various 5G applications, a high multiplier effect of the results is to be achieved, from which other German ports can also benefit in the future. The possibility of high data transmission and the low latencies in 5G campus networks are particularly exciting for the project, as they allow data to be transmitted in near real time, which is a prerequisite for autonomous driving, among other things. Further goals of the project are process optimization in real-time scheduling and the automated loading of bulk carriers.
Social responsibility
As a company, we bear a great deal of responsibility for our society and the environment. It therefore goes without saying that we are committed to social interaction in our region. We are proud to have supported numerous groups and associations through various partnerships for many years.
One of the projects close to our hearts is our collaboration with the Mercy Ships organization. This organization brings hope and healing to the poorest of the poor with hospital ships. We admire the commitment and dedication of the people at Mercy Ships and support this important work.
Quality management
Processes and services at the highest level – that is the benchmark for our work. In order to provide you, our customers, with optimum services at all times, we have established a certified quality management system at Wismar seaport some time ago.
It primarily includes the following tasks:
- actively taking responsibility for our company and for the satisfaction of our customers
- Achieving optimal work results through reliable, punctual and flexible action, timely communication and mutual respect
- Ensuring the professional development of our company in line with requirements through sound training and further education of our employees
- Compliance with all operational rules to achieve the highest quality and freedom from damage in all our processes
- Increasing the quality awareness of our staff and our service providers and suppliers
- Regular quality and efficiency checks of own and adjacent processes for continuous optimization
- Prompt recording, analysis and elimination of process deviations
- Maintaining order and cleanliness, independent and prompt reporting of damage and breakdowns
