Opening of the new railroad overpass

Over the past three years, two level crossings have been dismantled and replaced by a three-track railroad overpass. The aim of the measure was to separate inner-city road and rail freight traffic to the Wismar seaport to ensure the smooth coexistence of freight and road traffic in the center of the Hanseatic city.

The port has around 25 km of its own rail network and is electrified and connected to the European rail network. 14 of the 17 berths are equipped with a direct rail connection and the port’s own marshalling yard with 18 tracks offers the best conditions for the formation of block trains. In addition to the renewal of the tracks, the opening of the new railroad overpass also means shorter shunting routes for the seaport of Wismar.

Around 50% of the goods destined for sea transshipment already arrive at the port by rail. A first-class connection of the location to the rail network is therefore an important factor for the seaport of Wismar and a valuable contribution to green logistics.
